As women, not only do we have a menstrual cycle where our hormones change across the month, we also go through massive physiological changes - prenatal, pregnancy, post-natal and perimenopause.Â

For too long, we’ve been conditioned to push harder, eat less and work out more, but this places incredible stress on the female body, especially during perimenopause when significant brain and body changes are taking place.
One thing I’ve learned from working with hundreds of women is that we need to work with our hormones, NOT AGAINST THEM!Â
Take fasting, for example, this works well for men, yet in women, it disrupts a neuropeptide known as kisspeptin.Â
Fasting in women places the body under increased stress which in perimenopause is already a time of increased stress and inflammation.Â
When the female body perceives we have a deficiency in nutrients, ESPECIALLY CARBOHYDRATES (no, keto isn’t the answer either!), we have a significant reduction in kisspeptin.Â
This can cause dysregulation of appetite , disruption of the circadian rhythm of our hormones (insulin, thyroid hormones and glucocorticoid steroids) .
When we add exercise stress on top of fasting this can increase our stress hormones even higher, leading to more belly fat, a depression in thyroid activity (in as little as 4 days of low energy availability) and you may even increase menopausal symptoms.
